AUSTIN, MINN. – In 85 career games as an Austin Bruins, defenseman Andrew Leung only had one goal. Saturday night he scored the overtime winner to secure a weekend sweep for the Bruins over the Watertown Shamrocks 5-4.
The highscoring affair began in the first period when Watertown’s Jordan Brothers scored at the 3:33 mark. Kiril Borodulin netted his third of the weekend just minutes later to give the Shamrocks a two goal lead. Watertown added a third on their first power play chance of the weekend after an angled pass from Justin Bartley to Owen Chartier.
Down by three, the Bruins clawed their way back starting off with a goal from newcomer Logan Lambrecht at 10:47. Veteran forward Hugo Thulin cut the deficit to one with a sharp angle shot from the left half wall at 12:38.
Kyle Sorensen tied the game up on a breakaway two on one chance, ripping a pass from Gus Elbert past Shamrocks goalie Luke Courtney at 16:22 marking back to back nights the Bruins scored three unanswered goals.
The Bruins took their first lead of the game in the waning minutes of the second period when Hudson Weber-Stewart deflected a shot from Sorensen past Courtney at 17:49. Both Weber-Stewart and Sorensen finished the weekend with two goals.
The Shamrocks power play struck again in the third period when Brothers found the back of the net for the second time in the game to tie the game just under five minutes into the third.
For the sixth time in 20 meetings between these two teams, it would take more than 60 minutes to decide a winner.
The Shamrocks controlled the puck for the majority of the start of the overtime period, firing off two shots that were saved by Dillans Birkans. It only took one shot from Leung, cutting in from the right wall and tapping it through the legs of Courtney for his first career game winning goal.
The Bruins head to Blaine on Wednesday for a meeting with the reigning Robertson Cup Champion Maryland Black Bears at the NAHL Showcase.
