Cholak leads Bruins in Preseason Opening Win

AUSTIN, MN – Third-year forward Evan Cholak scored twice, while Alex Schilling and Owen Zdunski allowed only one goal combined, as the Bruins topped Brookings, 2-1 to open the preseason on Friday night at Riverside Arena.

Cholak scored the first goal of the game late in the first period, at 17:54 when he buried a rebound in the slot off a shot from defenseman Matt Eller. Jaden Shields picked up a secondary assist. The Bruins led 1-0 at the end of one period.

At 3:37 of the second, it appeared the Bruins scored again, when Eller centered a pass from behind the net to Grant Baetsen, who ripped a shot off the post and apparently across the goal line. After conferencing, the officials waived off the goal and the score remained 1-0. Alex Schilling was perfect in net before being replaced by Zdunski at 9:45 of the 2nd period.

Still up 1-0 at 11:04 of the third, Cholak struck again after Garrett Dahm drove the net from the left-wing circle and was tripped up. Cholak continued to drive through and backhanded home his second goal of the game. Just under four minutes later, Brookings finally got on the board, when Andrei Denyskin cashed in a pass from Marek Wazny to cut the lead back to one. Although he Blizzard put together a push with their goalie pulled in the final minute, the Bruins held on for the 2-1 win.

The Bruins and Blizzard play again on Saturday night at Larson Ice Center at 7:05. The game will be broadcast live on HockeyTV.com, with the “AWAY” feed carrying the Bruins broadcast. The Bruins return to Riverside Arena for their final preseason game on Friday, September 15th against the Minnesota Magicians at 7:05 PM. Tickets will be sold at the door only for $10 adult general admission. Students and seniors will be charged $5 and all season ticket holders get in free.
