Bruins Comeback Bid Falls Short in Brookings

Dec 11, 2016

BROOKINGS, SD – Trailing 4-0 entering the third, the Bruins scored twice in the first 5:04 of the final period, but couldn’t get any closer and fell by a 5-2 score to the Brookings Blizzard on Saturday night at Larson Ice Center.

The Blizzard scored just 36 seconds into the game when a Parker Revering shot through traffic flew past an unsuspecting Alex Schilling for a 1-0 Brookings lead, which held up through one period.

Brookings stretched the lead to 2-0 at 1:25 of the 2nd, as Paul Cotter found a hole between Schilling and the near goal post, set up by Zach Mitchell. At 14:14 of the 2nd, Nicholas Cardelli picked up a rebound and beat Schilling for a 3-0 Blizzard lead. With just over a minute to go, Tim Faulkner’s blast made it 4-0.

A power play goal from Dante Zapata, assisted by Evan Cholak and Justin Misiak got the Bruins on the board 3:29 into the third. At 5:04, Travis Kothenbeutel struck shorthanded – his second shorthanded goal in as many nights and suddenly it was 4-2. The Bruins failed to score on a power play shortly after and couldn’t cash in again as Mitchell hit the empty net in the final minute to seal it.

Brookings goaltender Josh Boyko made 32 saves for his 12th win. Schilling stopped 29 in the loss. The Bruins and Blizzard go at it once again back at Riverside Arena on Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM.
