Big first period carries Bruins to third straight win

BROOKINGS, SD – Evan Cholak, Dawson DiPietro, and Travis Kothenbeutel all scored first period goals as the Bruins took down Brookings and moved into a first place tie in the Central Division with a 4-1 win of Friday Night as Larson Ice Centre.

Cholak opened the scoring, putting home an Austin Rueschhoff rebound at 3:34 of the first period. Dawson DiPietro struck just over 10 minutes later, rushing up the left wing and flipping a shot over Brookings netminder Eric Hancock. Kothenbeutel's goal came in the period's final minute, as his backhand pass attempt deflected over the goal line. Hancock was lifted after the first period.

Luke Forfar scored the only goal of the 2nd period, picking a wide shot off the back boards from Paul O'Connor at 8:50. The Blizzard broke the shutout bid at 15:39 of the 3rd when Christian Canavati's shot beat Bruins goaltender Kris Carlson. Carlson stopped 24 of the 25 Brookings shots for his 2nd win. It was the Bruin's third straight overall victory and their fourth in the last five.

The Bruins take on the Blizzard again Saturday night at Riverside Arena for their home opener. Game time is 7:05 PM with gates opening at 6:00. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time at HyVee, Jim;s Marketplace, the Holiday Inn, and Games People Play. Tickets are $11 for adulta and $8 for students and seniors at the sponsor locations and $15/$12 at the door.
