BRUINS ALUMNI REPORT: A Trio of Firsts for Former Bruins

Nov 6, 2019

Plenty of firsts in this week’s edition of the Austin Bruins Alumni Report. As more recent Bruins break into the collegiate and USHL ranks, they’re making impacts early for their respective squads and continuing the tradition of Bruins making impacts beyond the NAHL.

NCAA DI:  For most college players, their first year is spent learning the system and getting accustomed to the pace of play. One former Bruin who’s found his stride is Joe Winkelmann (Bruins 18-19). The St. Louis, MO, native is competing for the Bentley Falcons in DI college hockey. On Friday of last week, the forward scored his first collegiate goal with quite the flair.

Winkelmann followed up his performance on Friday with an assist in the Falcons 6-3 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday.

NCAA DI: After playing for the Bruins for two seasons, Alex Schilling (Bruins ’16-18) made his NCAA debut on Friday, November 1. The Wayzata, MN, native came on in relief and played 28:19 in the game against Sacred Heart University. One night later, on November 2, Schilling started his first collegiate game and earned his first career victory in the process, making 21 saves in 24 shots against Sacred Heart, helping Air Force to the 4-3 victory.

USHL: In his third and final season in juniors, goalie Kyle McClellan (Bruins ’18-19) is making the best of his time in the USHL with the Omaha Lancers. On Saturday, November 2, McClellan notched his first win and shutout of his USHL career. McClellan shut the door on 24 attempts from the Sioux Falls Stampede en route to the Lancers 4-0 win over their Western Conference rivals.
